  • THCa (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) — what the research says

The acid form of THC found in raw cannabis and hemp flower; it is not intoxicating until heat removes its carboxyl group (decarboxylation) and turns it into delta-9 THC. Sold here as isolate, diamonds, badder, live resin and flower.

How it interacts with receptors. Very weak at CB1 (it does not fit the receptor the way THC does); a potent PPARgamma agonist in cell assays (Nadal 2017); inhibits COX enzymes in vitro.

What human research reports. Human research on THCa products is the delta-9 THC literature once the jar is heated (see delta-9 THC); raw-THCa studies are an active area.

Animal and cell research. Neuroprotective in Huntington's-disease cell and mouse models via PPARgamma (Nadal 2017); anti-nausea activity in rats at low doses (Rock 2013).
