THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin) — what the research says
The propyl homologue of THC. Unusual pharmacology: it blocks CB1 at low doses and activates it at high doses. Sold here as delta-9 THCV isolate and delta-8 THCV isolate.
How it interacts with receptors. CB1 neutral antagonist at low doses, partial agonist at high doses; CB2 partial agonist; activates TRPV1/TRPV2.
What human research reports. A 13-week randomized trial in 62 people with type-2 diabetes: 5 mg THCV twice daily lowered fasting glucose and improved beta-cell function vs placebo (Jadoon 2016). A brain-imaging study in healthy volunteers found 10 mg THCV changed neural responses to food reward and aversion (Tudge 2015). 10 mg THCV reduced some acute effects of THC in a 10-person crossover study (Englund 2016).
Animal and cell research. Improved insulin sensitivity in two mouse models of obesity (Wargent 2013); reduced food intake in rodents.
