What is THCp?

Tetrahydrocannabiphorol (THCP) is a naturally occurring phytocannabinoid first isolated from Cannabis Sativa in 2019 by scientists in Italy performing analysis on a strain known as FM2. Prior to being named THCP by researchers who discovered it in Cannabis, THCP was known as THC-Heptyl which refers to its extended tail chain. Structurally the only difference between THCP and THC is that THCP features a tail chain extended from pentyl to heptyl. This increased tail length is believed to contribute to higher binding affinity to both the CB1 and CB2 receptors and may also have unique properties.
Like THC itself, THCP can have several isomers such as Delta-9-THCP and Delta-8-THCP. Studies into the binding affinity have found that Delta-8-THCP binds to the CB1 receptor with a Ki of 22nM while Delta-9-THCP binds to the CB1 receptor with a Ki of 1.2nM. To compare Delta-8-THC binds to the CB1 receptor with a Ki of 44nM. This means Delta-8-THCP binds to the CB1 receptor approximately 2x stronger than Delta-8-THC and Delta-9-THCP binds to the CB1 receptor approximately 35x stronger than Delta-8-THC.
This increase in binding affinity can vary in terms of how it can translate into real life activity but it may mean that someone can use significantly less material to gain a desired effect or may dilute it into other blends for an enhanced entourage effect.
Although Delta-8-THCP was not confirmed to be found in Cannabis in the same study as Delta-9-THCP, it has been hypothesized that it likely is produced by Cannabis as a degradation product of Delta-9-THCP in the same way that Delta-8-THC is produced by Cannabis as a degradation product of Delta-9-THC.
Prior to being discovered naturally in Cannabis, both Delta-8-THCP and Delta-9-THCP were synthesized by scientists to research the endocannabinoid system which has led to some confusion with Delta-8-THCPs nickname, JWH-091 being wrongfully grouped with cannabinoids of unrelated structure classes that also have the JWH tag name assigned but this confusion is due to the researcher assigning JWH to any cannabinoid he researched regardless of structural class. Both THC and THCP are known as classical cannabinoids dibenzopyrans which is the same structure class that most of the natural cannabinoids in cannabis belong to while unrelated synthetic cannabinoids often belonged to the indole class. In short, cannabinoids like THC and THCP have no structure relation to the other unrelated structure classes of cannabinoids also researched by JWH but sadly due to the tag name confusion persists to this day.
Reported experiences with THCP can vary from person to person as with any cannabinoid but user reports often describe THCP as a micro-Delta-8 in that you only need to use a small amount to gain a similar effect to a larger amount of Delta-8 and some report that THCP greatly enhances the activity of other cannabinoids known as the entourage effect.

THCp vs Delta 9
Although THCp and Delta 9 THC are similar, they can be different in a few ways. From a legal standpoint THCp is legal in all 50 states thanks to the 2018 US Farm Bill as long as it is hemp derived as well as having 0.3% or less Delta 9 THC in its total active cannabinoids. Delta 9 THC is also legal because of the 2018 US Farm Bill, however, is legal as long as there is less than 0.3% in the total amount of active cannabinoids and also has to be hemp derived. Delta 9 THC is also legal if it is cannabis derived, however, that is only if you are in one of the 37 states where cannabis is considered legal medicinally, and recreationally in some cases. THCp is also stronger than Delta 9 THC. THCp has the ability to bind to the CB1 receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system 33 times more than Delta 9 THC. The other big difference is the rate of occurrence of both of these cannabinoids in cannabis and hemp plants. In the FM2 strain that THCp and CBDp were discovered in, it was shown that Delta 9 THC was occurring at 39 milligrams per a gram. THCp showed to be occurring at roughly 29 micrograms per a gram.
THCp – Frequently Asked Questions:
How Is THCp Made?
THCp is a naturally occurring cannabis in the cannabis and hemp plant. Unfortunately since it is only available in minute amounts, the THCp that you receive is created safely in a laboratory by trained chemists from a process that starts with CBD isolate derived from hemp.
How Is THCp Different from THC?
THCp is different from Delta 9 THC in similar but different ways. Firstly, both THCp and Delta 9 THC are considered to be naturally occurring in the cannabis and hemp plant. The difference is that Delta 9 THC is considered to be carbon in a diamond field compared to the THCp. THCp naturally occurs at a significantly lower rate than Delta 9 THC.
Is THCp Stronger than Delta 9 THC?
THCp is significantly stronger than Delta 9 THC. From a molecular standpoint THCp has seven carbons in its sidechain versus the five that Delta 9 THC has. THCp also binds to the same receptors that Delta 9 THC binds to in the body, those receptors are called the CB1 receptors. THCp also has 33 times the binding affinity that Delta 9 THC has to the CB1 receptors. The stronger the bind the stronger the effects can be.
Is THCp legal?
THCp is legal thanks to the 2018 US Farm Bill. That act defines hemp as: “All derivatives, extracts, cannabinoids, isomers, acids, salts, and salts of isomers, whether growing or not, with a delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol concentration of not more than 0.3 percent.” These regulations change on a regular basis, so we do recommend checking with your states current guidelines before purchase. In short, as long as THCp is hemp derived and has less than 0.3% Delta 9 THC in its lab results then the distillate is considered to be legal.
Is THCp Safe?
THCp is a newly discovered analogue cannabinoid that was found in 2019. Since it has only been around for less than 3 years the research on the cannabinoid is somewhat limited. The best way to determine if your THCp is safe and legal is through the lab results and a reputable seller.
Is THCp Psychoactive?
THCp is considered to be psychoactive like Delta 8 THC, Delta 10 THC, HHC, and others. THCp has seven carbons in its side chain at a molecular level versus the five that are in Delta 8 THC and Delta 9 THC. Since THCp is psychoactive some of the effects include intoxication, increase in appetite, relaxation, and other effects.
How Long Does THCp Take To Kick In?
The time THCp can take to kick in can vary based on how THCp is intaken. If THCp is vaporized, some of the effects can be felt almost immediately. If consumed, it may take as little as an hour or even up to three hours depending on the person to feel the effects. The reason there is such a variance in time is because of each person’s endocannabinoid system and metabolism being different from other people.
Is THCp a Synthetic Cannabinoid?
THCp is not a synthetic cannabinoid, it is actually a naturally occurring cannabinoid in trace amounts. It was accidentally discovered by Italian researchers funded by the UNIHEMP project in 2019. The team was actually looking at the chemical profile of the strain FM2 and noticed some irregularities while using mass spectronomy and other high precision testing equipment. Upon investigating these irregularities, they found two new cannabinoids, THCp and CBDp.
Is THCp Addictive?
THCp has not been available long enough to determine whether or not it is addictive. Since THCp is considered to be more potent than Delta 9 THC it does have a higher binding affinity than other THC’s, more time will be needed to determine its addictive properties.
How long does THCp last?
For people that have vaporized THCp, people have expressed feeling the effects anywhere from 4 to 7 hours. Consuming THCp as an edible can have an even longer time of effectiveness than other edibles. We have heard some reports of the effects lasting for over 6 hours for some people. The experience from using THCp can vary from person to person depending on a few factors. The first is how often you utilize other cannabinoids including Deltas like Delta 8 THC and Delta 10 THC. These may have a factor in how long you may feel the effects.
What is THCp good for?
THCp is a great alternative for consumers to try an alternative form of THC. Since this is a naturally occurring analogue, it stands out from other newer cannabinoids available that are not considered naturally ocurring. THCp is also stronger than Delta 8 THC, Delta 9 THC, Delta 10 THC, and others too.
Will I Fail a Drug Test From THCp?
THCp will make you fail a drug test. Even though it is not a naturally occurring cannabinoid it is still extremely similar to Delta 9 THC at a molecular level. If you intake THCp it may stay in your body for up to 3 months. Factors that can affect the length of time THCp stays in your system include your body’s endocannabinoid system as well as your metabolism. If you are concerned about taking a drug test in the near future, please be aware of the aforementioned information before intaking THCp.
Can I fly with THCp?
THCp can easily be flown with as it’s legal because of the 2018 US Farm Bill created by the Department of Agriculture. As long as the THCp is hemp derived and under 0.3% Delta 9 THC content you should have no issues. State laws do change on an almost monthly basis, sometimes without notice, we always recommend to double check with where you’re traveling.
