What the research says about CBD (cannabidiol): Strongest evidence base of any cannabinoid: randomized trials of purified CBD (Epidiolex) in two rare epilepsies led to FDA approval in 2018 (Devinsky 2017, NEJM: 39% median seizure reduction vs 13% placebo in Dravet syndrome). Read the studies →

CBD (cannabidiol) — what the research says

The most-studied non-intoxicating cannabinoid. Sold here as 99% isolate (crystalline powder) and in broad-spectrum distillate.

How it interacts with receptors. Very low direct affinity for CB1/CB2; acts as a negative allosteric modulator of CB1, a 5-HT1A serotonin-receptor agonist, a TRPV1 agonist and an inhibitor of FAAH (the enzyme that breaks down anandamide).

What human research reports. Strongest evidence base of any cannabinoid: randomized trials of purified CBD (Epidiolex) in two rare epilepsies led to FDA approval in 2018 (Devinsky 2017, NEJM: 39% median seizure reduction vs 13% placebo in Dravet syndrome). A double-blind study found a single 600 mg dose reduced anxiety measures during a simulated public-speaking test in people with social anxiety (Bergamaschi 2011). A 2019 case series (72 psychiatric-clinic patients) reported anxiety scores fell in 79% during the first month; sleep scores were less consistent (Shannon 2019).

Animal and cell research. Hundreds of animal and cell studies on inflammation, seizure models, pain models and neuroprotection; most human-relevant conclusions still come from the epilepsy trials.
