CBD Pain Relief: How CBD Became The New Pain Killer

Chronic pain affects a significant portion of the population in the US and globally. Understanding the widespread impact of chronic pain is crucial in creating awareness and taking positive actions to address the issue. While opioid prescriptions have been commonly used to alleviate chronic pain, they come with a high risk of addiction and overdose. However, CBD, a compound derived from cannabis, has displayed pain-relieving qualities throughout human history and has emerged as a safe alternative to opioids.

The Prevalence of Chronic Pain

According to a clinical study conducted in 2019, 20.4% of adults in the US suffer from chronic pain. Estimates suggest that the prevalence of chronic pain is equally concerning globally, affecting 20% of adults. Chronic pain can limit life or work activities, making it a public health priority to understand the origin of pain.

The Dangers of Opioid Use

Chronic pain patients seeking relief may not necessarily need an opioid prescription. In 2019, nearly 50,000 deaths from opioid-related overdose were recorded, and over 165,000 persons died from opioid medication from 1999 to 2014. Cannabis, on the other hand, has no recorded overdoses to date and has been used by humans for over 4,500 years for medicine, fuel, and fiber.

Understanding CBD

CBD is a compound derived from cannabis that has displayed an array of benefits for physical and mental ailments such as chronic pain, central nervous system disorders, and various neurological disorders. CBD is one of over 120 cannabinoids found in cannabis, including cannabichromene (CBC), cannabigerol (CBG), cannabinol (CBN), and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBD is commonly used by spine patients as an off-label treatment, and in a clinical study, 94% of opioid users using CBD said that it may significantly reduce opioid use and improve chronic pain.

The Benefits of CBD

CBD has been shown to be an effective anti-inflammatory, antiemetic, antipsychotic, anxiolytic, and anticonvulsant agent. In a clinical study of 214 patients with spine complaints using CBD-rich cannabis extract, the reported benefits were pain relief (46.3%), improved sleep (33.3%), and reduced anxiety (20.4%). CBD can also be a viable option as an alternative medication to various drugs for many individuals seeking relief from chronic pain, neurological disorders, or muscle convulsions.

Hemp

Low THC, high CBD cannabis sativa is called hemp, and this specific plant has seen its uses throughout history towards industrialization, pain relief, the treatment of insanity, and as a staple in ceremonies and diet. Hemp as a natural textile resource is a valuable and sustainable asset, so much as to incite an industrial hemp revolution for George Washington.

While CBD isn’t a fix-all, it is worth looking into as a safe and effective alternative to various drugs for pain relief, and for the treatment of neurological disorders and muscle convulsions. It is crucial to understand the benefits of CBD and its uses in promoting public health and well-being, and to raise awareness of the dangers of opioid use.
