CBN (cannabinol): what the research says

Formed when THC oxidises (old cannabis is CBN-rich). Weakly intoxicating — about a tenth of THC's potency at CB1. Sold here as isolate and in gummies.

How it interacts with receptors

Weak partial agonist at CB1 and CB2; TRPA1 agonist; its 11-hydroxy metabolite is considerably more active at CB1 than CBN itself (Sydney 2024 rat work).

What human research reports

First placebo-controlled trial (293 adults with poor sleep, 7 nights): 20 mg CBN reduced night-time awakenings and overall sleep disturbance vs placebo, with no next-day fatigue (Bonn-Miller 2024). A 1975 volunteer study found CBN increased THC's sedative effect (Karniol 1975).

Animal and cell research

EEG study in rats (University of Sydney, 2024) showed CBN increased both REM and non-REM sleep — the first objective sleep data.

Studied together: CBD (cannabidiol)

Trials of CBN for sleep used it alongside CBD; many customers run the two together in the evening. Read the CBD (cannabidiol) research →
